Lakeland Case Study
The Challenge
After nearly 30 years in the home, the homeowner had become all too familiar with recurring plumbing problems. What started as occasional clogs in the master bathroom escalated into repeated backups and multiple plumbing service calls over the years. The toilet had been pulled and the line snaked several times, but the relief was always temporary. On more than one occasion, wastewater backed up through the toilet, flooded the bathroom, and forced a flooring replacement.
A previous plumbing inspection identified a low section in the piping where toilet paper and waste repeatedly collected, creating chronic blockages. During that evaluation, the home’s original exterior cleanout appeared to have never been opened and was in poor condition, which made access uncertain and added complexity to the project.
The home presented several challenges:
- Nearly 30 years of recurring clogs and backups at the master bathroom
- A low section of pipe where toilet paper and waste repeatedly collected
- Repeat snaking that restored flow only temporarily
- Wastewater backups that flooded the bathroom and required new flooring
- An original exterior cleanout that appeared never to have been opened and was in poor condition
Rather than keep paying for temporary fixes, the homeowner chose a permanent trenchless rehabilitation.
Initial Inspection Findings
Our camera inspection confirmed that the home’s aging cast iron drainage system had deteriorated significantly over decades of use.
Primary Findings
Findings included:
- Severe mineral deposits throughout multiple vent stacks
- Significant ledging caused by corrosion inside the cast iron pipe
- Heavy scaling reducing the effective inside diameter
- Multiple directional transitions at the base of the kitchen and laundry vent stack
- Several pipe sections that could not be fully verified prior to installation
- Existing system geometry requiring additional installation planning
The inspection also revealed that the bottom of the kitchen and laundry vent stack transitioned through multiple bends before entering the horizontal drain, creating a particularly challenging section for rehabilitation.
Because of the numerous offsets, bends, and unverified pipe sections, our operations team added installation time so every stage of the project could be completed safely and correctly without compromising quality.
Before Rehabilitation
Years of corrosion had left the cast iron pipe with rough, uneven walls coated in mineral deposits and heavy scale. The buildup restricted flow and created ideal locations for waste to catch, which is what drove the recurring backups.
The image below shows the interior condition of the line before rehabilitation.

Step 1: Thorough Mechanical Cleaning
Before a structural liner can be installed, the host pipe must be restored as close as possible to its original inside diameter.
Using specialized cleaning equipment, our technicians removed decades of:
- Rust buildup
- Heavy mineral deposits
- Calcium scaling
- Corrosion ledging
- Surface obstructions
This process restored the flow path while creating the clean surface necessary for proper liner adhesion.
After Cleaning
With the scale and corrosion removed, the true condition of the host pipe is visible and the diameter is restored for lining.

Step 2: Navigating a Complex System
Not every rehabilitation project is straightforward.
This home’s drainage system included:
- Multiple pipe transitions
- Consecutive bends
- Several vent stack tie-ins
- Sections that could not be completely verified during the initial inspection
Rather than rushing the installation, we built additional time into the schedule so the crew could work through each transition carefully while holding the quality standards a CIPP installation requires.
Complex systems demand experienced installers and patience.
Step 3: Structural CIPP Installation
With the pipe fully prepared, our installation team installed a structural cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) liner throughout the rehabilitated sections.
The finished liner created a seamless, corrosion-resistant pipe inside the original cast iron system without excavation or major demolition.
The completed rehabilitation provides:
- Smooth interior pipe walls
- Improved hydraulic flow
- Elimination of corrosion surfaces
- Long-term structural integrity
- Protection against future deterioration
The Final Result
Where the original cast iron pipe showed decades of corrosion, mineralization, and rough interior surfaces, the completed liner restored the system with a clean, continuous pipe designed to perform for decades.

Project Outcome
Instead of continuing the cycle of clogged toilets, emergency plumbing visits, and costly floor repairs, the homeowner now has a structurally rehabilitated sewer system that addresses the root cause of the problem, not just the symptoms.
By rehabilitating the existing cast iron system with trenchless technology, we completed the project without the extensive excavation or disruption that comes with traditional pipe replacement.

Why This Project Matters
This Lakeland project highlights a common issue in Florida homes built decades ago. Repeated drain cleaning can temporarily remove a blockage, but it cannot reverse corrosion, eliminate ledging, or restore pipe diameter. As cast iron continues to deteriorate, those temporary repairs become more frequent and more expensive.
Through a detailed camera inspection, careful project planning, and expert trenchless rehabilitation, we turned a complex drainage system into a structurally renewed pipeline without tearing up the home.
When recurring backups are caused by aging cast iron and not just clogs, a permanent rehabilitation restores the system, protects the home’s structure, and avoids unnecessary excavation.
Another aging cast iron system renewed without digging. If you own an older home in Lakeland or anywhere across the Tampa Bay area, the same trenchless approach can restore your sewer line without tearing up your property.
