Case Study: Restoring a Cast Iron Sewer Line Without Excavation
The Challenge
Like many Central Florida homeowners with aging cast iron plumbing, this homeowner had reached the point where repeated drain cleaning was no longer solving the problem.
Over the years, numerous plumbing companies had been called out to snake and clear the drains. While each visit temporarily restored flow, the underlying condition of the pipe continued to deteriorate.
The home presented several challenges:
- Septic system with no exterior cleanout
- Kitchen accessed through an interior wall cleanout
- Laundry line previously rerouted
- Metal roof with solar panels limiting conventional access options
- Main line and kitchen branch intersecting beneath the bathroom
Despite these obstacles, our inspection team was able to camera the entire line from the kitchen wall cleanout all the way to the septic tank.
Initial Inspection Findings
Pre-Cleaning Condition
The camera inspection revealed years of deterioration common in older cast iron sewer systems.
Findings included:
- Light to moderate scale buildup through the first 17 feet
- Heavy mineralization and calcium deposits beginning around 17 feet
- Thick, lumpy corrosion reducing the internal diameter of the pipe
- Grease accumulation in the invert of the line
- Uniform scaling throughout portions of the vent stack
- Areas of standing water caused by internal roughness and scale buildup
The pipe had reached the stage where routine snaking could no longer restore proper hydraulic performance because the restriction was being caused by corrosion, not debris.
Before Cleaning
The pipe walls were heavily encrusted with corrosion and mineral deposits, leaving an irregular flow path and significant surface deterioration.
The image below shows the severe scaling and loss of interior pipe condition before rehabilitation.
Step 1: Precision Cleaning
Before a structural liner can be installed, the host pipe must be restored as close as possible to its original inside diameter.
Our technicians used specialized cleaning equipment to remove decades of accumulated scale, rust, grease, and calcium deposits.
After cleaning:
- Internal diameter was restored
- Loose corrosion removed
- Flow path reopened
- Surface prepared for structural lining
After Cleaning
The difference was dramatic.
The heavy mineral buildup had been removed, revealing the true condition of the host pipe while restoring nearly full diameter for installation of the liner.
Step 2: Trenchless CIPP Installation
Once the pipe was properly prepared, our certified installers installed a structural cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) liner through the existing access point.
Because no excavation was required:
- Landscaping remained untouched
- Septic system was not disturbed
- Floors and foundations remained intact
- Installation was completed without replacing the existing sewer line
The finished liner created a brand-new seamless pipe inside the existing cast iron system.
Final Result
The completed liner provides:
- Smooth interior walls
- Improved hydraulic flow
- Corrosion resistance
- Root resistance
- A fully structural pipe designed to provide decades of reliable service
The Outcome
Instead of continuing the cycle of repeated drain cleaning and temporary repairs, the homeowner now has a permanently rehabilitated sewer system without excavation.
The project transformed a deteriorating cast iron line into a structurally renewed pipeline while avoiding the cost, disruption, and damage associated with traditional pipe replacement.
What the Homeowner Had to Say
★★★★★
“Pipeliner Pros exceeded my expectations. The entire team was professional, personable, and very informative from start to finish.”
“Matthew did the initial inspection and clearly walked me through the video of my main line, explaining exactly what needed to be done. The quote was fair, and Tony helped move everything forward while answering all my questions.”
“The technicians, Juan, Yadira, Elier, and Agustin, worked tirelessly all day and kept me informed throughout the process, showing me each step of the repair. I really appreciated their transparency and effort.”
“Crystal in the office was also amazing, always responsive, patient, and reassuring. And a big thank you to Jay, who came out after hours to fix a small issue post-completion.”

Why This Project Matters
This project is a great example of why camera inspections are so important. What appeared to be “just another clog” was actually years of progressive cast iron deterioration. By identifying the root cause early and rehabilitating the pipe before it failed, the homeowner avoided the far greater expense and disruption of an emergency sewer replacement.
At Pipeliner Pros, we believe informed homeowners make the best decisions. That is why every inspection includes a detailed camera review, a clear explanation of the pipe’s condition, and recommendations tailored to the home’s needs, not a one-size-fits-all solution.
